STATUS

Live at smartboxauto.com

“Nobody reads the manual.”

THE CHALLENGE

SmartBox needed a website of its own: a brand completely separate from its parent company, for a product that’s technical and high-stakes. Its audience is locksmiths and auto techs who’ve been burned by clunky interfaces, cryptic error codes, and 83-page manuals. They don’t have time to be impressed. They need to trust that it works.

THE INSIGHT

Make the most boring page the one people remember.

The site talks like the sharp-tongued colleague who everyone inevitably turns to when things go south: dependable, a little wry, and never wasting anyone’s time. The humor makes it memorable. The precision makes it trustworthy. Neither gets to win.

THE WORK

A voice on every page.

I concepted the site’s structure and wrote every page, from the homepage to the fine print. Features sound like a person, not a spec sheet: “Blanks aren’t cheap. Verify the chip before you cut.” Even security gets a line: “Locked up tighter than your cousin’s Camaro.”

An FAQ people actually read.

The FAQ is typically the least-read page on any product site, so it’s where the voice works hardest. It answers technical, high-stakes questions about cable order, refunds, and updates with complete precision, plus a line worth remembering: “Even smart tools can’t override physics.”

Support that promises a human.

In a category known for black-hole inboxes, the support pages lead with people. Distributors become “basically SmartBox, but with handshakes,” and the promise is simple: “We’re humans. We’re fast. We’ll help.”

THE OUTCOME

Live, and still talking.

smartboxauto.com is live, with one voice running from the homepage to the fine print and a brand that stands entirely on its own. Feedback was positive from day one, from pros who are famously hard to impress and from the internal team, who backed both the content and the design direction. The director of operations who brought me on championed the work start to finish.
